Giving your child a tool kit for life

A Parent Group About Emotion Coaching*

Designed & Taught by Yvette L. Ward, Psy.D.

Our children's worlds have changed dramatically over the past decade or two. Parents have to work harder, have less free time to spend with their children, and many live far from relatives. Children often spend more time watching television and playing video games than playing with other children. Neighborhoods may not be safe places to practice meeting new people. In short, our children have lost many of the old opportunities for learning basic emotional and social skills. Research confirms that these skills have been declining over the past 25 years. Compared to their parents' generation, our children (on average) are

  • more nervous & irritable
  • more sulky & moody
  • more depressed & lonely
  • more impulsive & disobedient

Much like athletic coaches, emotion-coaching parents teach their children strategies to deal with life's ups and downs.

Emotion-coaching dads have an extremely positive effect on their children's emotional development.

What's Going On In There?devotes six weekly sessions to teaching parents the important skill of Emotion Coaching. Kids who are emotion-coached are more healthy emotionally, more resilient, and are better able to cope with marital conflict, divorce, and blended families.

What's Going On In There? helps parents assess their own parenting style and teaches them about:

  • Parenting styles
  • 5 key steps of emotion coaching
  • Emotion-coaching strategies
  • Marital conflict & your child's emotional health
  • Dads' crucial role in emotional development
  • Emotion coaching for different developmental stages
  • When emotion coaching is not appropriate
